The 2024 Paris Olympics: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience with a Lasting Impact

Working on the 2024 Paris Olympics was nothing short of extraordinary for me. From the electrifying atmosphere of world-class competition to the seamless execution of one of the biggest sporting events in history, every moment was a testament to human ambition and collaboration. Paris dazzled the world, not just with its iconic backdrop, but with an event that was both innovative and deeply rooted in tradition.

My Olympics was centred around the field hockey which was hosted at Yves-du-Manoir Stadium on the outskirts of Paris, which holds 15000 people.

I had the privilege of overseeing the maintenance and operation of the stadium PA system throughout the field hockey competition, culminating in the finals. My role encompassed mixing the live sound elements that brought the matches to life: pre-match build-up, commentary, audience interaction, referee microphones, and music, all carefully balanced to enhance the electric atmosphere.

The France matches were a particular highlight, as the stadium swelled to full capacity, creating an unforgettable energy. The national anthem reverberated through the stands like thunder, creating a moment of pure sporting theatre that will stay with me forever.

But beyond the thrill of the Games, what made Paris 2024 truly remarkable was its commitment to sustainability. These were the greenest Olympics yet, setting a new standard for future hosts. With a goal to halve the carbon footprint compared to previous Games, Paris prioritised existing and temporary venues, reducing unnecessary construction. The Olympic Village, designed to be repurposed into eco-friendly housing, showcased the city’s long-term vision.

Clean energy powered the event, with renewable sources supplying electricity and low-carbon transport options, including expanded cycling infrastructure, encouraging greener travel. Even the food served was more sustainable, with locally sourced, plant-based options to cut emissions.

Beyond the event itself, the legacy of the Games will be felt for decades. Paris benefited from infrastructure improvements, including upgraded transport networks and eco-conscious urban development. The Games boosted tourism and revitalised local businesses, while also inspiring a new generation of athletes and promoting inclusivity in sport. Most importantly, they proved that large-scale global events can be both spectacular and more sustainable.

Being part of this historic event was an experience like no other—one that will continue shaping Paris and its people for years to come. The magic of 2024 was more than just two weeks of competition; it was the beginning of a lasting transformation for sport, sustainability, and the city itself.
